This intimate development of 25 new build houses, designated for affordable rent and shared ownership, is situated in the historic mining town of Swadlincote in South Derbyshire.
The landlocked site presented several challenges, notably its proximity to the adjacent Grade II Listed Newhall Methodist Church, which necessitated careful consideration throughout the design process.
The new two- and three-bedroom homes are thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the surrounding context, drawing inspiration from the local architectural vernacular.
The design incorporates materials, compositions, and proportions reflective of the area, featuring sash-style windows, traditional chimneys, and timber apex porches that pay homage to the character of the National Forest.
The site's complex topography required innovative engineering solutions to create usable and accessible private amenity spaces while meeting essential functional requirements.
As a result, the development not only provides high-quality housing but does so in a manner that fits cohesively with the scale and character of the local area, successfully addressing the inherent constraints of the site.
